Research project funded by Riders4Riders Onlus e Marina Romoli Onlus in 2013 -2014.
After evaluating a number of projects in search of a collaboration with the foundation Wings for life, we have decided that for the years 2013 and 2014 we will help fund the research of Professor Gregoire Courtine of the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fedédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland with a total amount of € 60.000,00.
The laboratory of Professor Courtine is interested in finding ways to restore sensory and motor functions which were broken due to a spinal injury.
The research project in which we have decided to support consists in trying to restore lost functions combining a system of electro-stimulation with a pharmacological therapy. The studies made to this point indicate that this strategy could provide significant functional results. A recovery even more important could possibly come from the combination of this approach with other therapies directed at stimulating the regeneration of nerve fibres. The development of this line of research is being carried out in collaboration with a consortium of European laboratories that are part of the project “Neuwalk” funded in part by the European Commission.
